August 13, 2025LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Major medical events can be financially devastating for some people, leaving them with unmet health needs when needed most.
SOS International is addressing these hardships.
“It’s such a wide spectrum of things that individuals in our community need to be able to remain safe and healthy at home,” said Denise Sears, president and CEO of SOS International.
Sears said last year, the organization began assisting local case managers who were looking for medical supplies for their clients, such as walkers, wheelchairs, bandages and adult diapers.
The unhoused, uninsured and underinsured are primarily who the organization helps, but anyone can find themselves in crisis, Sears added.
“The woman whose house burned down, she lost her wheelchair,” she said. “Well, she has insurance, but insurance said she’s not eligible for a new chair until 2027. Well, SOS is there to help. And that could be any one of us.”
The program helped almost 500 people in 2024, and Sears said she expects that number and the need for assistance to grow.
