Advancing Global Health
Imagine raising a family without having access to a pediatrician. For more than 80% of the world’s population, this is reality. Over 400 million people live without access to basic medical care and they are the reason we do this work.
SOS was founded as an international organization first to address these jarring needs in the developing world where most people are fortunate if they can reach a clinic after a day or more on foot or bicycle. We serve over 108 countries not just with medical supplies and equipment but with strategic partnerships and solutions that provide lasting change.
Mothers & Children
According to the World Health Organization, 4.5 million women and babies in developing countries die every year in childbirth or the first few weeks afterwards. Reversing this trend is a critical piece of our international mission.
SOS cultivates partnerships with international organizations, healthcare professionals and individuals to support improvements in maternal and infant health. In the past year, five of the humanitarian 40-foot container shipments sent to the developing world contained ob/gyn supplies and equipment including ultrasounds, labor and delivery beds, infant warmers and incubators to save the most vulnerable newborns-- equipment that is critical in meeting our goal of saving the lives of mothers and infants. Our efforts have reduced maternal mortality in Kumasi, Ghana, by 24% and eliminated preventable deaths in North Tongu. We are using this work as a model in other developing regions.
