WLKY – SOS International In Louisville Turning Medical Surplus Into Life-Saving Supplies
March 26, 2025LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Teddy bears helped some young students Tuesday learn going to the doctor shouldn’t be scary.
Students from Southern High School’s health occupation program joined third-graders at Blake Elementary School on Tuesday. The high school students acted as medical professionals and performed procedures on teddy bears while explaining the process to the younger students.
“I think it’s really to prepare them for doctors, make them not so scared being at the doctors,” said Destiny Starkey, a senior at Southern. “I know a lot of kids are scared. There’s different medical stations to show them it’s OK to not be afraid.”
The supplies needed to the simulated clinic — like stethoscopes, bandages and blood pressure cuffs — were provided by SOS, a nonprofit that recovers and redistributes medical supplies all over the world.
