Have we shared Carolina's story with you yet? This sweet girl just started the first grade, and thanks to a donation from SOS, she can fully engage with her classmates during activities. We recently gave her a special standing wheelchair (called a “jackrabbit”), and now she's able to hug her brother and play with her friends at recess. It's smiles like these that make our work so meaningful. There is no denying the positive impact we are making in our own community and beyond. Thank you to our partners, volunteers, donors and friends who make these stories possible.
Get ready to be inspired by the stories we share during #GiveforGoodLou next Thursday, Sept. 12! Stories like this one about Joy... she was the first baby placed in an incubator that SOS collected from Norton Hospital and delivered with $227,967 of labor & delivery equipment to St. Anne’s Clinic in Kumasi, Ghana, last summer.
This shipment not only saved Joy’s life, but it also elevated St. Anne to hospital status with a labor & delivery ward that serves thousands of families– and it reduced maternal mortality rates by 24% in nine months.
These photos from last Monday show the loading and departure of a container of supplies bound for #tanzania. This project was a partnership with the Garlove family. Thank you to Lee Garlove, a realtor who serves on the board of directors for Norton Healthcare where some of the supplies were sourced, and to Todd Lammert, System VP for Supply Chain at Norton Healthcare - both whom helped load the last items onto the container! We will share updates when this shipment of critically needed supplies arrives in country later this fall.
Filled with excitement and hope, yesterday we said goodbye to this massive shipment of medical equipment and supplies bound for Zambia. The shipment, valued at $285,000, will equip St. Dominic’s Mission Hospital in Ndola, Zambia with critically needed supplies to expand the level of care for the community.
The Dominican Sisters started St. Dominic's as a small clinic to help the Copperbelt Province. At one time, many people living in the Copperbelt had income provided by working for the mines, but with changes in ownership of the mines and the need to use heavy equipment rather than provide jobs, this area has some of the same urban/rural combinations of poverty we have in our rust belt in the US. But, the level of poverty is extreme in Zambia, Africa.
This hospital was once a two-room beer hall, but it now has a labor and delivery ward, a pharmacy, a dental clinic and an emergency room. We are honored to support the people of Zambia, and we will share updates from this shipment when it arrives in country! ... See MoreSee Less

This is Emma Gibson, Maddie Ziegler, Savannah Crick, and Elly Hampton - 4 of the students from Madisonville North Hopkins High School and Madisonville North Hopkins Ffa Kentucky FFA Association who helped transform a medical clinic from a shipping container. Now fully stocked with supplies and equipment from SOS, the shipment is on its way to Liberia thanks to transportation from UPS. This gift from Kentucky students where it will prevent women from delivering babies unattended on the ground, spare children from malaria and improve health outcomes instantly– and for generations. Please follow and celebrate this story with us, and we'll share more when the shipment arrives in October! ... See MoreSee Less
